The red and green hills of Wales are a sight to behold, but it’s the coast that really steals the show. With more than 400 miles of coastline, there’s no shortage of beaches to unwind on during your visit. From classic coves and inlets to hidden lagoons and sandy bays, there’s something for everyone.
With Aberystwyth’s location in the middle of Cardigan Bay, it boasts proximity to some of the best and most varied beaches in all of Wales. From sandy beaches near Aberystwyth, to pebbled coves, there are some of the best beauty spots in Aberystwyth. Read on and we’ll introduce you to the most stunning beaches on the west coast of Wales, so next time you visit Aberystwyth, you can look forward to spending time on the beach.
- Mwnt Beach
Located 35 miles south along the coast from Aberystwyth, this little hidden cove is well worth the trip. It’s a golden, rectangular beach surrounded by steep cliffs and the headland of Foel y Mwnt. This beach is well off the beaten track and may be a little hard to get to; however, we think that’s part of the appeal. It’s home to an unspoilt natural beauty, and if you’re lucky, you’ll spot dolphins, porpoises, and sharks.
- Penbryn Beach
Situated between the sleepy coastal villages of Penbryn, Tresaith and Llangrannog, Penbryn beach is located roughly 30 miles south of Aberystwyth. It’s one of Wales’s favourite beaches and has won various awards for its beauty and tidiness. It’s sheltered from the wind by sloping woodlands straddling its surrounding cliffs, creating a sense of tranquillity, and making it the perfect beach to relax and unwind. It’s a good walk from the surrounding villages and hosts a handy little café, just a short walk across from the cliff line
- Borth Beach
At just 6 miles north along the coast, this is the first beach to feature that is within walking distance of Aberystwyth. Arrive at high tide and you’ll be fooled into thinking that Borth Beach is just another boring shingle beach. But arrive when the tide is out, and you’ll discover its secret: a three-mile stretch of ocean-kissed golden sand. With clear and shallow water, it’s the perfect place to go paddling. You could take a walk along the coast and soak in the views of expansive sand dunes whilst your feet soak in the goodness of the ocean.
- Cei Bach Beach
Cei Bach beach is located just a mile and a half to the west of New Quay. It’s a quiet, sheltered beach, that boasts breath-taking views out across the rest of cardigan bay. It features one of the most spectacular sunsets in all of Wales – and is perfect for relaxed evening walks.
- Llanrhystud Beach
Being just 8 miles south along the coast, Llanrhystud beach is incredibly convenient for visitors to Aberystwyth. It’s primarily a long pebble beach, although, at low tide, it features some exposed sand. Unlike the other beaches listed so far, this beach is exposed; it’s backed immediately by open fields and then rolling green hills further aback. If you’re after a cosy beach to shelter from the elements, then perhaps this beach isn’t for you; however, if you want to experience a sense of openness and awe as you stroll along the Welsh coast, you should visit Llanrhystud beach.
- Llangrannog Beach
Llangrannog is another sheltered sandy beach, located just north of Penbryn Beach. It’s perfect for taking your family for a swim; there are lifeguards in operation over the summer months. It’s particularly popular for water sports such as sailing and surfing and, if you’re interested in wildlife, there’s a seal colony based next to the neighbouring peninsula of Ynys Lochtyn.
That concludes our list of the top beaches you need to visit if you’re staying in Aberystwyth. Whether you’re after a cosy cove to shelter from the elements, an expanse to take in the coastal views, or a place to swim and surf, there’s something for you. Remember to pack your beach wear next time you visit Aberystwyth!
