6 Reasons to Visit Aberystwyth

Aberystwyth is one of Wales’ most popular seaside resorts and has been attracting visitors for over 150 years. There are many reasons why it’s worth visiting this beautiful town, which sits on Cardigan Bay between Snowdonia National Park and the Cambrian Mountains. If you're visiting and are wondering what's on in Aberystwyth this weekend, then here are six attractions in Aberystwyth:

The National Library of Wales

The largest library in Wales, the National Library of Wales, has a collection of over 6 million items. The library sits near the campus of Aberystwyth University and is a treasure trove of books, periodicals and manuscripts. It holds one of the world's largest collections of Welsh materials, including an incredible collection of folklore and folk music. The library also has many rare books dating back to before 1603 – and is open to visitors all year round.

Many museums to visit – with great views

Aberystwyth is home to three museums that tell the story of the people and places of Ceredigion. The Ceredigion Museum, Amgueddfa Ceredigion Museum and The School of Art Museum and Galleries are all worth a visit to learn more about the past and present of this historic region.

The Vale of Rheidol railway

If you like trains, the Vale of Rheidol Railway is for you. You can take one of their two daily services from Aberystwyth to Devil's Bridge and back. The train runs along a narrow-gauge track, which means that it's sleeker than most other trains and riding it will make for an experience that you won’t soon forget.

Pen Dinas: remains of an Iron Age fort overlooking the town

If you're visiting Aberystwyth, you're probably looking for a place off the beaten path that still offers plenty to do. Pen Dinas is just south of Aberystwyth and provides a beautiful view of the sea and some great hiking trails. You can take a walk around the perimeter of Pen Dinas whilst reflecting on the ruins of an epic iron age fort. It’s also a great place to watch the sunrise or sunset.

Aberystwyth Castle and gardens.

Aberystwyth Castle is a Grade I listed Edwardian fortress and one of Wales's most important historic buildings. It's located on the seafront at Aberystwyth.

The castle has been renovated over the years but retains its original features, such as the gatehouse and curtain wall. The grounds of Aberystwyth Castle are stunning, with paths winding through many acres of meandering woodland gardens filled with flowers and trees—and there are also plenty of wildlife spots for you to enjoy!

The seafront promenade with views across Cardigan Bay.

If you want to relax and explore, the seafront promenade at Aberystwyth is your best bet. The walkway follows Cardigan Bay for 1.5 miles along a sandy beach and provides spectacular views of the Welsh coastline's craggy cliffs.

With plenty of benches and picnic tables, it's also an ideal spot to have lunch or enjoy a post-meal stroll with friends or family. If you're feeling active, there are plenty of opportunities to cycle around this beautiful part of Ceredigion County on one of its many bike paths!
