There are few countries in the world that have as much character, beauty, and variety as Wales. With its majestic coastline, unrivalled views of snow-capped mountains, and its abundance of green spaces and quaint villages, Wales is truly a sight to behold. But what makes this country so special isn’t just the breathtaking sights - it’s the people who live there.
That’s why we have put together this guide to the best places you have to visit if you’re coming to Wales this year. After all, there are only so many sunny days, cool cafes, and picturesque walks you can fit into a single trip.
Snowdonia National Park
Covering a total of over 823 square miles, Snowdonia is the largest national park in Wales. Situated in the northeast of the country, the park boasts a seemingly endless landscape, packed with stunning scenery. It’s home to mount Snowdon: the tallest mountain in England and Wales. If you’re the adventurous sort, it’s definitely worth a climb; although, with over 1000m of elevation, you’d better come prepared.
The park has historical significance, featuring heavily in the legends of King Arthur. Upon immersing yourself in the dramatic landscape of Snowdonia, it’s easy to see why.
Brecon Beacons
The Brecon Beacons are a mountain range in the south of Wales.
The scenery here is somewhat less dramatic than Snowdonia, but equally enjoyable. The range is home to a number of quaint villages, nestled in a backdrop of rolling green hills and winding walking paths. You’ll also find glistening waterfalls, rivers, and lakes – as well as a variety of wildlife, such as Brecon Beacons’ famous wild ponies.
Devil’s Bridge and the Hafod Estate
Devil’s bridge is actually a series of three bridges stacked upon one another. They cross Rheidol Gorge where River Mynach plunges deep down into a wooded valley, creating a breath-taking waterfall. It’s easily accessible from Aberystwyth, being just 12 miles from the coastal town.
The bridge is located next to the meticulously well-kept Hafod Estate, boasting over 200 acres of restored ancient woodlands and 18th century gardens.
Ceredigion Coastal Path
The Ceredigion Coastal Path is a route that runs along the coast of the county of Ceredigion. It’s 96km long and can easy be accessed at both ends. The path is relatively flat, but there are a number of short hills to climb throughout. The path passes through several towns and villages along its way, including Aberystwyth, Cardigan, Aberaeron, Lamphey and New Quay. The path is well maintained, but can be muddy in some places during the winter months – we think summer is the best time to walk it.
Caernarfon Castle
Caernarfon Castle is an epic medieval castle in Caernarfon, Gwynedd, North Wales. The current main building was largely constructed during the 13th century, although there have been substantial rebuilding and restoration projects on several occasions.
The castle sits at the head of a large natural harbour, at the mouth of the river Seiont, which was used as a safe haven for mariners during the Middle Ages. Today the harbour is still used for both commercial and leisure activity.
Aberystwyth
Aberystwyth is a seaside university town in Ceredigion, Mid Wales. It lies on the coast of Cardigan Bay, and is surrounded by stunning coastal scenery and walks.
Aberystwyth has a history dating back to the 1200s when Aberystwyth castle was built. Today it serves as an important educational centre, being home to Aberystwyth university as well as the national library of Wales and the largest Arts centre in Wales. The town has a wide range of contemporary shops and cafés to cater for all tastes, and there is also a good selection of traditional pubs to enjoy a good pint or two!
That concludes our list of the 6 places you have to visit in Wales this year. Whether you’re interested in culture and history, or simply want an idyllic setting in which to experience picturesque walks this summer, Wales has something for you. We guarantee that Wales’ depth and breadth of stunning locations and features are bound to leave you satisfied, and itching to come back next year.
